Best Umbrella Stroller: Baby Jogger City Mini Review

Last Update: July 8, 2016

Best Umbrella Stroller: Baby Jogger City Mini Review. The Baby Jogger City Mini ($250, 17.1 lbs.)  is our pick for best lighweight/umbrella stroller.

The Baby Jogger City Mini is an excellent tri-wheel stroller with oversized canopy and fully reclining seat. Baby Jogger’s quick fold technology is amazing—you lift a strap in the middle of the stroller and zip! It’s folded. An optional car seat adapter can turn a City Mini into a travel system if you wish.

Stroller 101

Do you know how many strollers Amazon sells? Are you sitting down? Yes, Amazon offers an astounding 208 stroller models as of this writing.

If you’ve never bought a stroller before (or are a veteran parent who needs a refresher), check out our Stroller 101. It’s a quick and easy read on how to get the best stroller for you and your baby.

How we picked a winner

The secret to our stroller recommendations is our reader feedback—after selling more than a million copies of our book, Baby Bargains, we are fortunate to have a vocal and active parent base that tells us what works with their stroller . . .  and what doesn’t.

So here’s how we do our stroller reviews. Yes, we do hands-on inspections of strollers, both at industry trade-shows and at stores. But the real work comes from compiling the hundreds of emails we receive a week from parents about their strollers. (We also have an active stroller message board with detailed feedback from parents).

When it comes to strollers, we look at three key factors: ease of use, overall quality and long-term durability. And let’s not forget value—the name of our book is Baby Bargains, after all.

We’ve been rating and reviewing strollers since 1994—yep, that long! Over the years, we’ve compiled detailed data on stroller reliability. That’s what we can bring to our stroller reviews that other bloggers can’t: 20+ years of data, research and insight.

The Winner: Best Umbrella Stroller: Baby Jogger City Mini

Yes, this is our top pick for best umbrella or lightweight stroller—the Baby Jogger City Mini. A few caveats: even though we call this stroller the best pick in the umbrella category, it isn’t a true umbrella stroller. That’s because when folded, it looks like this:

Umbrella strollers often have two handles; the City Mini has one. But that’s good, because it is much easier to push with one hand.

The tri-wheel City Mini (single $250, 17.1 lbs.; double $450, 26.6 lbs.) is Baby Jogger’s best-selling stroller, featuring a full recline and large canopy. In the past year, the City Mini got a few tweaks: a slightly larger seat, an easier to access storage basket and an auto lock feature when the stroller is folded.

The secret sauce to the City Mini Series is the company’s Quick-Fold technology: pull up on one strap and zip! The stroller collapses and folds. No complicated buttons or latches. No multi-step process. The Quick-Fold has super-sized Baby Jogger’s sales in recent years and other stroller makers have rushed to copy it.

Parent feedback on the City Mini has been quite positive. Our praise the overall ease of use and features like the large canopy, which puts the canopies on other lightweight strollers to shame. Here’s a look at the canopy (with the seat fully reclined). Note how much coverage it provides:

Finally, we should note that Baby Jogger sells car seat adapters ($25-35) for the City Mini that fits most major brands of car seats. This is one advantage the City Mini has over our other umbrella (lightweight) stroller picks—it can accommodate an infant car seat. You can buy the car seat adapter direct from Baby Jogger or from Amazon. Here’s what the stroller looks like with an infant car seat attached:

Amazon review feedback is very positive, with a whopping 83% of reviewers giving the stroller four or five stars.

FYI: There are previous versions of the stroller for sale on Amazon, which helpfully refers to them as past years editions (2012 model, etc). We would stick with the current year model

Flaws but not deal breakers

Here’s a run-down of complaints we hear on this stroller:

• Tippy. Three-wheel strollers by their very nature can be tippy—and we’ve seen a few reviews that complained the stroller tipped over when fully loaded. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear there are any injuries associated with these reports. While we don’t think this is a widespread issue, you do have to take care when using a three wheel stroller—example, when a toddler climbs in or out of the stroller by themselves. An adult should hold the stroller steady in that case.

• Car seat adapters that break. We have seen a half dozen reports on saferproducts.gov that the car seat adapter on the stroller broke, especially when the stroller went over a bump.

2009 recall for defective bucklers. 41,000 Baby jogger City Mini strollers were recalled back in 2009 for “restraint buckles that could break or unlatch,” according to the CPSC. While no injuries were reported due to this defect, it is something to keep in mind in case you buy a used City Mini—all the affected strollers were made form 2007 through 2009.

• Despite the name, this is not a jogging stroller. Yes,  you’d think with the brand name “Baby Jogger” you could run with this stroller . . . and yes, Baby Jogger got its start selling jogging strollers. But the City Mini is ”not intended for jogging,” as the company helpfully points out on their product page for this stroller. Despite this admonishment, we still see complaints online from folks who try to run with this stroller—and then discover the front wheel locks up or some other issue.
