Stroller 101

Do you know how many strollers Amazon sells? Are you sitting down? Yes, Amazon offers an astounding 208 stroller models as of this writing.

If you’ve never bought a stroller before (or are a veteran parent who needs a refresher), check out our Stroller 101. It’s a quick and easy read on how to get the best stroller for you and your baby.

How we picked a winner

The secret to our stroller recommendations is our reader feedback—after selling more than a million copies of our book, Baby Bargains, we are fortunate to have a vocal and active parent base that tells us what works with their stroller . . .  and what doesn’t.

So here’s how we do our stroller reviews. Yes, we do hands-on inspections of strollers, both at industry trade-shows and at stores. But the real work comes from compiling the hundreds of emails we receive a week from parents about their strollers. (We also have an active stroller message board with detailed feedback from parents).

When it comes to strollers, we look at three key factors: ease of use, overall quality and long-term durability. And let’s not forget value—the name of our book is Baby Bargains, after all.

We’ve been rating and reviewing strollers since 1994—yep, that long! Over the years, we’ve compiled detailed data on stroller reliability. That’s what we can bring to our stroller reviews that other bloggers can’t: 20+ years of data, research and insight.

The Winner for Good Umbrella Stroller: Chicco C6/Capri

Our Pick

Chicco C6 Capri

The Chicco C6 (also known as the Capri; $80, 11 lbs.) features a two-position seat recline, five-point harness and basic canopy . . . it is a best bet for the mall. Yes, you read right—it weights just 11 lbs and costs $80.

Chicco C6 is Chicco’s entry level umbrella stroller—there is a basic canopy and basket. The wheels do feature all-wheel suspension, which is nice at this price level. A carry-strap makes it easier to cart it around when closed. And the price includes a carry bag, which is good for airport travel. Here’s what the carry bag looks like:

The seat on the C6 doesn’t fully recline, so this stroller is designed for babies over six months of age. The maximum weight is 37 lbs.—most toddlers won’t hit that until age four or so. So the C6 should last you through toddlerhood.

Fans like how durable this stroller is—it’s perfect for travel or the mall. Yes, the canopy doesn’t offer as much coverage as more expensive strollers . . . but that isn’t a big concern in the mall.

Flaws but not deal breakers

Taller parents complain the handle on the Chicco is uncomfortable for them to push without kicking the wheels as they walk. Hence, this stroller is probably best for moms and dads on the shorter side (under 5’6”).

The crotch strap isn’t adjustable, so larger toddlers may find the seat uncomfortable. FYI: The distance between the crotch strap and back of the stroller is about 4 inches.

A few parents also complain that when folded, the wheels can get the canopy dirty (as the wheels fold up to the canopy) . . . but that is the case with most umbrella strollers. Here’s what the fold looks like—notice how the rear wheels touch the canopy:

The C6 is rather bare bones—there is no cup holder for the parent or toddler. The basket is also small . . . you can fit a purse or diaper bag, but don’t expect to put much more down there. The cross bars on the back make accessing the basket a bit difficult. Here’s a pic from an Amazon review of the basket:

To Sum it Up

The Chicco C6/Capri is a great, basic umbrella stroller for $80. The light weight and ease of use (plus overall durability) make up for its skimpy canopy and otherwise lack of amenities (no cup holder, etc). This stroller is best for light duty in the mall or travel.
